Rui Toscano lives and works in Lisbon, where he was born in 1970. His visual approach comes from painting. He started to paint and gain some visual awareness at Ar.Co, school of visual art, and later at Lisbon School of Fine, then he switched over smoothly to sculpture. Since then his work has been triggered and informed by everyday film, rock music, sound and monochrome, which he has used, explored, crossed over and expanded in all sorts of directions in his videos and sculptures. He has over the years uncovered a great capacity for enriching his field of creative possibilities, his systems of reference and the formal solutions for his work through the resources offered by the different media (sculpture, sound, video, installation, design). Toscano is also a copious drawer.
